decent 3-laser line and optics test kit given the price
I teach science and physics classes at our home school co-op. One of our lessons is optics. I saw this entry-level kit from Exbepe and thought it would be helpful for demonstrations and labs.The main portion of this kit is the 3-laser setup which shine vertical lines so you can see how the light rays behave when striking the various surfaces. You can turn on any/all of them via a separate switch. You have to “dial in” each beam with a small screwdriver to try to get them all going parallel to each other. Mine were very out of alignment out of the box. It does take a little bit of patience and work to get all 3 beams aimed precisely parallel. It requires 2 AAA batteries which aren’t included. The battery door was quite challenging to get to slide back in once the batteries were in.Then there are various lenses and a curved “mirror,” which is chrome-painted plastic, but does well enough to show how curved mirrors work with both a concave and convex end. The lenses and prism allow you to demonstrate optical refraction. We will use ray tracing to determine the focal length and magnification of the various objects. You can use snell’s law to determine the index of refraction for the acrylic tile as well. It should perform well enough for classroom demonstrations as well as hands-on lab exercises.The back of the box has a centimeter scale marked out and angles marked around a circle. I find it easier to use a sheet of paper with a line on it to draw the ray lines and then use a compass to make measurements, but this could work if you want.For the price, it’s a decent kit. Mine was missing the triangular prism. It’s not something we need for our classes, so it’s not too great a loss.I have borrowed a high-end version of this with 5 lasers, but that one also costs 5 times the price. So, I like what this is for its price. It’s reasonable for our budget and allows for “good enough” lab/demonstrations. I don’t have to worry about the kids having to be super careful with an expensive laser source.

Lasers not aligned
The crucial component of this optics set is a unit with 3 lasers that are supposed to be parallel. When these 3 lasers are pointed at the included lenses and mirrors it demonstrates different kinds of refraction and reflection.Unfortunately, in the product I received, the 3 lasers are not aligned parallel to each other. They shine out at slight but obvious angles. As a result, the effects of refraction and reflection are all a little bit uncentered and not clearly displayed. You can still see the concepts in action, but it’s not as impressive as it should be.The set of lenses and multisurface mirror are all made of plastic and work as expected. There is a small pamphlet identifying the various lenses and defining refraction and reflection, but it lacks clear explanations of the phenomena or instructions for experiments to try for yourself.

Very cool science set
This simple set is a very cool way to demonstrate light bending with lenses and mirrors. My kids love this set because it’s so simple, and yet really really fun. The lights are not lasers – they are safe and easy to use for even young kids, and the lenses don’t focus the light – they only redirect it, so it’s not going to damage anyone’s eyes.Imagine your kids or students using this kit to bend and push light into specific patterns or imaginative paths and it’s well worth the money. It’s also a multi-use kit. There are tons of ways to incorporate it into other experiments and projects (I used it to trigger sensors on a circuit board project, so it became a key part of that interactive experiment.)

Better than expected.
After reading the reviews, I wasn’t expecting much from this kit. For the price of $17.99, this eleven piece experiment set is actually pretty good. You get eight acrylic lenses of various shapes, a three way light source, a multi-function reflector and a “stage” with a 360 degree diagram to measure the light ray angles. While the items aren’t of the highest quality, overall there’s enough here to play around with and learn about the different ways lenses work. You can really get a good idea about the effects that the various shaped lenses have on a ray of light. I believe you can also use the light source to get a good idea of the focal length of small lenses. In my opinion, for the price, it’s a pretty decent kit.
